Oman has reiterated its dedication to ensuring maritime security and the unhindered navigation of international waters, while also advocating for stronger ties with Southeast Asian nations. This commitment was articulated during a ministerial meeting in Manila, Philippines, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC).
During the meeting, Oman’s Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, underscored the pivotal role of international law, mutual respect, and peaceful cooperation in sustaining both regional and global stability. He highlighted the necessity of engaging in dialogue and diplomacy as means to resolve conflicts and foster trust among countries.
Emphasizing the significance of key international waterways, Al Busaidi stressed that channels such as the Strait of Hormuz must remain open, secure, and accessible to facilitate global navigation and commerce. He pointed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as a crucial framework for safeguarding maritime security and ensuring the continuity of global trade, food security, and energy supplies.
Oman also advocated for enhanced collaboration among coastal states and those utilizing international shipping lanes. The minister cited the Strait of Malacca and Singapore as exemplary models of successful cooperative maritime security efforts. Oman affirmed its commitment to bolstering maritime partnerships with member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
