In a bid to mend strained relations, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed a shared desire with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to “turn the page” and foster a stronger partnership. This remark followed a significant meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Pezeshkian described the dialogue as constructive, highlighting a mutual commitment to future collaboration.
This encounter represents the most senior-level interaction between Iran and the UAE since escalating tensions in West Asia put their relationship under strain. Previously, the UAE had suspended trade and financial exchanges with Iran amid regional unrest. However, the recent discussions aimed at addressing regional and international developments, promoting stability, and fostering peace and development signal a potential thaw in relations.
The timing of these talks aligns closely with a joint statement from Iran, the UAE, and other BRICS nations advocating for restraint in regional conflicts. Economic ties remain vital, as Dubai continues to serve as a crucial commercial hub for the Iranian community. Despite international sanctions, it remains an important conduit for economic activities between the two nations.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on a planned meeting between Iran and Gulf states concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He stated that he was not worried about this meeting, which is set to occur in Oman amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
