Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz if US Lifts Sanctions

by admin477351

Iran has indicated that the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz could be reopened in six days if the United States agrees to Tehran’s stipulated conditions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi revealed that Tehran is currently assessing Washington’s response to its proposal, which remains available for negotiation. The conditions put forth by Iran include the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and the cessation of hostilities across regional fronts.

The discussions face a significant hurdle due to disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program. The United States demands that nuclear issues, such as uranium enrichment, be addressed from the beginning of any talks, while Iran prioritizes discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring security in the vital waterway. The strait, which formerly facilitated roughly one-fifth of the global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, is critical for international energy markets, and its prolonged closure could have severe global economic implications.

Amid these diplomatic tensions, Iran’s Defense Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi cautioned that any renewed military action by the US would inflict “enormous damage” on Washington and its regional allies. He expressed confidence in Iran’s capacity to retaliate against further aggression.

The negotiations remain stalled as both parties continue to stand firm on their respective conditions for ending hostilities. This impasse leaves the prospects of reopening the strategically essential Strait of Hormuz uncertain, as the international community watches closely for any signs of progress.
