WhatsApp is introducing a significant update by allowing users to connect via usernames instead of phone numbers, altering the way communication takes place on the platform. This new privacy feature is being gradually implemented, with users now able to reserve unique usernames ahead of a broader global release anticipated later this year. Once the feature is fully operational, individuals will be able to initiate chats using only a username, offering an extra layer of privacy by not exposing their mobile number.
The username system permits users to create a distinctive handle within the app. To message someone, only their username is required, keeping phone numbers private. If a desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp has a built-in generator to suggest alternatives. Notably, there will be no public directory for usernames, ensuring that only those who know the exact username can establish contact, thus enhancing user privacy.
To reserve a username, WhatsApp users need to update their app and navigate to the following path: Settings → Account → Username. The app will notify users when the feature becomes available in their area. Given WhatsApp’s vast user base, early reservations are encouraged as popular usernames are expected to be in high demand.
Adding an extra privacy layer, the system will offer an optional “username key.” This functions as a second tier of security, allowing users to share this key separately to control who can initiate conversations with them. The introduction of usernames is aimed not only at personal users but also at creators, businesses, and public accounts, allowing them to align their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
While usernames offer a new way to connect, WhatsApp has confirmed that this feature is optional. Users who prefer to use phone numbers can continue to do so. Notifications will be sent within the app as the feature becomes accessible in different regions.
