Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at 85. Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles residence on Wednesday, surrounded by his loved ones, as confirmed by a family statement.
A Montreal native, Cullen’s career took off in Canadian radio and television before he became a household name for his distinctive voice work. He first brought Optimus Prime to life in the 1984 Transformers animated series, a role he reprised in seven major films from 2007 to 2023, along with multiple spin-offs. Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime was heavily influenced by his brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, who advised him to shape the character as a true hero—strong yet not aggressive.
In addition to Optimus Prime, Cullen lent his voice to Eeyore, the gently despondent donkey from Winnie the Pooh, in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous other projects, including films, TV shows, and video games. His ability to imbue characters with distinct personalities made him a beloved figure in the realm of voice acting.
Cullen’s talents extended beyond these roles. He gave life to KARR, the villainous counterpart of KITT in the Knight Rider series. His contributions to film included providing the eerie clicking sounds for the creature in the 1987 blockbuster Predator and voicing King Kong in the 1976 movie remake. These performances only added to his legacy as one of the most versatile voices in the industry.
Throughout his extensive career, Cullen received significant accolades, including a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his work as Optimus Prime. In 2023, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, cementing his enduring impact on popular culture and the entertainment industry.
