India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal after a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final match held at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. This win marked India’s successful defense of their title, showcasing their dominance in the T20 cricket format against their arch-rivals.
Opting to bat first, India set a formidable target by scoring 211/6, fueled by a strong start from Abhishek Sharma and a powerful finish by Tilak Varma. Abhishek’s rapid half-century was instrumental, propelling India to an impressive 81/2 in the Powerplay, their best performance in the initial overs against Pakistan in T20 internationals.
Though India looked poised to amass an even larger total, Pakistan’s bowlers staged a comeback in the middle overs. Key contributions from Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed saw Indian wickets fall, slowing their momentum. However, Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls, bolstered by a 62-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who scored 27, ensured India crossed the critical 200-run threshold.
In response, Pakistan’s chase was anchored by Hasan Nawaz, who delivered a remarkable innings of 96 not out from 51 balls. His partnership of 87 runs with Saim Ayub brought Pakistan within striking distance, applying significant pressure on the Indian bowlers.
India’s bowling unit, however, regained control at a crucial juncture. Washington Sundar’s stellar performance in the 18th over disrupted Pakistan’s momentum, and Jasprit Bumrah’s disciplined bowling in the penultimate over further tightened the screws. With Pakistan needing 33 runs from the last over, Shivam Dube successfully defended the target, sealing India’s victory.
The victory not only secured another Asian Games gold medal for India but also reinforced their superior record against Pakistan in T20 international cricket. This triumph added to India’s growing list of accolades in the sport, showcasing their depth and resilience on the international stage.
